If you do not already have a habit of gathering daily manna the first thing in the morning (we can look at the example given to us in Exodus 16 and find the pattern for make it a habit. Establish your life and your schedule to allow you the necessary time to do your daily collection first thing every morning to give you the strength to make it through the day. And remember that today’s manna will not be sufficient for tomorrow; tomorrow’s manna must be collected tomorrow morning. Thursday, May 23, 2019
Today's Passage : Today's Passage:Paul and Silas Released from Prison Bible Verse :Acts 16:35-40 "But when it was day, the magistrates sent the police, saying, “Let those men go.” And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Therefore come out now and go in peace.” But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and do they now throw us out secretly? No! Let them come themselves and take us out.” The police reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Roman citizens. So they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and asked them to leave the city. So they went out of the prison and visited Lydia. And when they had seen the brothers, they encouraged them and departed. " Message:
Paul’s bit of pridefulness shows through again here. You can almost hear him saying, “They can’t treat me like this. I’m a Roman citizen!” And indeed, both he and Silas have been treated incorrectly under Roman law, as if they are a couple of Jews of no account rather than citizens.
The important character in all of this is Lydia, who is barely mentioned. Unlike the other cities of Macedonia, Philippi will have a house, courtesy of Lydia, to serve as a center of worship and meeting, and she herself no doubt would keep it ready to receive converts.
It is fortunate that Philippi will have such a solid church, because it is the center of a large district. The Roman Province of Macedonia was much larger than one thinks of it today. Due to the lasting effects of Alexander the Great, it included nearly all of Greece except the Peloponnesian peninsula, and all or parts of modern-day Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Serbia. Founding an active and continuing church in Philippi was critical for the spread of Christianity to the north.
