If you do not already have a habit of gathering daily manna the first thing in the morning (we can look at the example given to us in Exodus 16 and find the pattern for make it a habit. Establish your life and your schedule to allow you the necessary time to do your daily collection first thing every morning to give you the strength to make it through the day. And remember that today’s manna will not be sufficient for tomorrow; tomorrow’s manna must be collected tomorrow morning. Wednesday, January 23, 2019
Today's Passage : Today's Passage:The Coming of the Holy Spirit Bible Verse:Acts 2:1-13 "When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”" Message:
Although most Bible translations refer to the coming of the Holy Spirit as a “wind,” the original Greek called the phenomenon a “violent breath”. This is important, because Christ had previously imparted the Spirit to the apostles by breathing on them (John 20). Thus, when the Holy Spirit is given more widely to Christ’s followers, it represents the very breath of Jesus, fulfilling his promise that he would not leave his followers alone.

People speaking in many languages sounds familiar; it occurred in the Old Testament. Remember that in the story of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11), where God prevented men from building a tower as high as heaven. He stopped them by making them all speak different languages, and then scattered them all over the earth.
Now the Holy Spirit has, in effect, done the opposite of what God did in the Tower of Babel. People have come to Jerusalem from all over the world. When the disciples speak, every one of them can understand, as if his own language is being spoken.
The gift of unity is one of Christ’s gifts to the world. Remember, knowledge of God had been given only to the Jews in the Old Covenant; however, Christ had promised to spread his salvation not only to the Jews, but to all people in the world. Where the Old Covenant divided humanity, the New Covenant brings them together.
Note that the Christians “began to speak in other tongues.” The listeners did not begin to “hear” miraculously; the disciples actually spoke in other languages.
Meditation : Prayer : Now all glory to you, great God, who is able to keep us from falling away and will bring us with great joy into your glorious presence without a single fault. All glory to you who alone are God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord. All glory, majesty, power, and authority are yours before all time, and in the present, and beyond all time!.......Amen. |
