If you do not already have a habit of gathering daily manna the first thing in the morning (we can look at the example given to us in Exodus 16 and find the pattern for collecting daily manna), make it a habit. Establish your life and your schedule to allow you the necessary time to do your daily collection first thing every morning to give you the strength to make it through the day. And remember that today’s manna will not be sufficient for tomorrow; tomorrow’s manna must be collected tomorrow morning. Saturday, July 14, 2018
Today's Passage : Today's Passage:Subjecta:Joab Counsels David Bible Verse:2 Samuel 19:1-8 "Joab was told, “The king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.” And for the whole army the victory that day was turned into mourning, because on that day the troops heard it said, “The king is grieving for his son.” The men stole into the city that day as men steal in who are ashamed when they flee from battle. The king covered his face and cried aloud, “O my son Absalom! O Absalom, my son, my son!” Then Joab went into the house to the king and said, “Today you have humiliated all your men, who have just saved your life and the lives of your sons and daughters and the lives of your wives and concubines. You love those who hate you and hate those who love you. You have made it clear today that the commanders and their men mean nothing to you. I see that you would be pleased if Absalom were alive today and all of us were dead. Now go out and encourage your men. I swear by the Lord that if you don’t go out, not a man will be left with you by nightfall. This will be worse for you than all the calamities that have come upon you from your youth till now.” So the king got up and took his seat in the gateway. When the men were told, “The king is sitting in the gateway,” they all came before him. " Message:
Joab was certainly one of the great generals of history. Time after time he led David’s armies to victory, and his loyalty to David was unshakable. Although his name is not remembered widely today, he was instrumental in piecing together the largest empire Israel was ever to have. He acted as the hand of God.
Here, he is the one trusted counselor left in David’s camp. Although he was a warrior, not a courtier, David is on the verge of destroying himself—and thus Israel—through his grief over Absalom’s death. Joab is the one person who can stop him. He advises David to lead those who are faithful to him, and David heeds his advice. Remember, David is still a king without a country. Although Absalom is dead, David is stranded in a rather distant colony to the east of the Jordan River, his capital still somewhat in the control of people hostile to him. If he is ever to be the true King of Israel again, he will need his army; and Joab saves it.
Only Joab has the brass to tell David exactly what he needs to hear. Basically, “stop whimpering and man up.”
Meditation : Prayer : Walk with me, dear Lord, so that I may not be alone as I face this day, but always in your presence. Your joy is a lighthouse in a world often dark with sin, and I pray that I may reflect the light of your truth, to inspire others as I have been inspired. In the name of Christ, bless me this day, and all whom I may meet.,..Amen |
