Friend,
If you do not already have a habit of gathering daily manna the first thing in the morning (we can look at the example given to us in Exodus 16 and find the pattern for collecting daily manna), make it a habit. Establish your life and your schedule to allow you the necessary time to do your daily collection first thing every morning to give you the strength to make it through the day. And remember that today’s manna will not be sufficient for tomorrow; tomorrow’s manna must be collected tomorrow morning. Monday, July 9, 2018
Today's Passage : Today's Passage:Subjecta:Can This Be the Christ? Bible Verse:John 7:25-31 (ESV) "Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.” So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”" Message:
Jesus has caused quite a hubbub in Jerusalem. The rumor has spread that there is a man named Jesus who may be the Christ, or who claims to be the Christ, and whom the authorities seek to kill for heresy. A few people from Jerusalem therefore talk about him and their conversation is recorded here.
These poor people don’t know what to think. First, they recognize Jesus as the man that is causing all the stir and the person that the authorities want to kill. But they are impressed, knowing that he is a virtual outlaw, that he would stand up and speak boldly in public. And so they reason that the authorities must think he is the Christ, because otherwise they would have arrested him.
On the other hand, they have been taught that the Messiah would come in a blaze of glory (as the Old Testament indicates in places) and they think this means that he will appear magically—nobody will know where he is from. But Jesus is just a simple man from Nazareth. He doesn’t look like the Messiah.
But Jesus straightens them out. They do know where he comes from, and it isn’t Nazareth; he comes from God. And he proclaims in public, once again, the words that have gotten him in so much trouble with the civil and religious leaders of Jerusalem: He has been sent by God and, unlike them or their religious leaders, he knows God.
Finally, we return to one of the central themes of the Gospel of John, that Christ made himself known by signs or miracles. It is these signs that finally turn many people to belief. The question, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”, is rhetorical. Those who ask this question are saying, in effect, “Haven’t you seen what he has done? Do you really expect more?”
Meditation : Prayer : Almighty God, by your Holy Spirit you have made me one with your saints in heaven and on earth. Grant that in my earthly pilgrimage I may always be supported by this fellowship of love and prayer, and know myself to be surrounded by their witness to your power and mercy. I ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.,..Amen |
