Friend,
If you do not already have a habit of gathering daily manna the first thing in the morning (we can look at the example given to us in Exodus 16 and find the pattern for collecting daily manna), make it a habit. Establish your life and your schedule to allow you the necessary time to do your daily collection first thing every morning to give you the strength to make it through the day. And remember that today’s manna will not be sufficient for tomorrow; tomorrow’s manna must be collected tomorrow morning. Wednesday, June 6, 2018
Today's Passage : Today's Passage:Subjecta:Nathan Rebukes David (2) Bible Verse:2 Samuel 12:15-25 (NLT) "After Nathan returned to his home, the Lord sent a deadly illness to the child of David and Uriah’s wife. David begged God to spare the child. He went without food and lay all night on the bare ground. The elders of his household pleaded with him to get up and eat with them, but he refused. Then on the seventh day the child died. David’s advisers were afraid to tell him. “He wouldn’t listen to reason while the child was ill,” they said. “What drastic thing will he do when we tell him the child is dead?” When David saw them whispering, he realized what had happened. “Is the child dead?” he asked. “Yes,” they replied, “he is dead.” Then David got up from the ground, washed himself, put on lotions, and changed his clothes. He went to the Tabernacle and worshiped the Lord. After that, he returned to the palace and was served food and ate. His advisers were amazed. “We don’t understand you,” they told him. “While the child was still living, you wept and refused to eat. But now that the child is dead, you have stopped your mourning and are eating again.” David replied, “I fasted and wept while the child was alive, for I said, ‘Perhaps the Lord will be gracious to me and let the child live.’ But why should I fast when he is dead? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him one day, but he cannot return to me.” Then David comforted Bathsheba, his wife, and slept with her. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son, and David named him Solomon. The Lord loved the child and sent word through Nathan the prophet that they should name him Jedidiah (which means “beloved of the Lord”), as the Lord had commanded. " Message:
Nathan’s baleful prediction comes true almost immediately, as David loses his son. But God’s forgiveness apparently shows in the birth of another son, and not just any son, but a child who is to become one of the great men of history, builder of the Temple, whose name is still used as a metaphor for wisdom.
But the forgiveness is apparent, not actual. For although Solomon will be full of wisdom—let us say, for the sake of argument, the wisest man who ever lived—and although he will finally accomplish God’s will for the Hebrews, by building the Temple in Jerusalem, he will become mired in sin. The wisest man in history cannot find salvation with all of his wisdom. The most powerful man in the history of Judaism cannot find salvation with his power. Rather, Solomon will destroy the Hebrew Empire with his sin.
If one wanted to interpret this passage—that is to spin intellectual fantasies about the Bible—one might speculate about the son who dies. If David had not sinned, would this son have been Christ? Or at least, does the death of this son imply a sort of placeholder for Christ, a demonstration that the “son” of David will not yet be born? Or perhaps the dead son is simply a comparison to the living son, to be born after another 1,000 years. In other words, a lesson that the wages of sin are death. But that is not what the Bible says.
