If you do not already have a habit of gathering daily manna the first thing in the morning (we can look at the example given to us in Exodus 16 and find the pattern for make it a habit. Establish your life and your schedule to allow you the necessary time to do your daily collection first thing every morning to give you the strength to make it through the day. And remember that today’s manna will not be sufficient for tomorrow; tomorrow’s manna must be collected tomorrow morning. Friday, July 5, 2024
Today's Passage : Today's Passage :Peter and John on Trial Bible Verse:Acts 4:13-22 (ESV) "Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened. For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old." Message:
Caiaphas, Annas, and the rest now have a sticky situation on their hands. Peter and John have openly defied them by teaching the doctrine of Jesus; however, the Sanhedrin cannot discount the miracle, because the healed man is standing right in front of them. Neither can they pass off the miracle as a fraud, because of the man’s age, which makes it unlikely that he recovered spontaneously from his lifelong chronic disease. They have to admit it is a “notable sign.”
The sentiment against Jesus has begun to shift, which puts the Sanhedrin in an awkward spot. There is no popular hysteria demanding John and Peter’s death. However, the number of supporters is starting to grow, which worries the high priests.
They try to strike a bargain with the two apostles: if they will stop preaching, the Sanhedrin will spare their lives. But Peter and John reject it. They are ready to die rather than abandon the mission Christ had left them.
And so the high priest must let them go free — for now.
As a footnote to this passage, we learn that the high priests consider Peter and John to be “uneducated.” From what evidence I have seen—and I don’t claim any particular expertise—Matthew might have been the only apostle who could read and write. In several ways, he appears to be the “odd man out” among the apostles. Eleven of them appear to have been common working men but “good Jews.” Matthew, on the other hand, was a tax collector—a Roman collaborator and thus a traitor to his people—but he was educated. Early Christian commentators state that Matthew wrote down Jesus’ words in “HebrewIn all likelihood, the word Hebrew was used to mean Aramaic, the language spoken by the Jews of the time..”
