Today's Passage : Today's Passage :The Son of David
Bible Verse:Matthew 22:41-45 (NASB)

"Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question: “What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?” They said to Him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”’? If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his son?” No one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another question"

Message: First off, we need a brief explanation of Jesus’ confusing argument. Let’s start with Psalm 110. Read it, substituting “God the Father” for “the Lord”, and “Jesus Christ” for “my Lord.” Now it is much easier to glean the meaning. Psalm 110 is a prophetic quote in the form of God the Father talking to Christ, i.e. the Messiah. Thus we see that David, who wrote Psalm 110, was referring to Christ as “my Lord” a thousand years before Jesus was born. Using this as a starting point, Jesus shows that the Messiah (actually, Jesus Himself) is not the “son” of David, but the Son of God. Fathers do not call their sons “Lord”; since David calls the future Christ “my Lord”, David cannot be called his father. This can get quite confusing, since in other senses Jesus is properly called the son (i.e. lineal descendant) of David. But now, He is using the term “father” literally; God — not David — is Jesus’ actual, biological father. Everyone must therefore call Jesus Lord, except His Father, who is Yahweh —“I AM”. What Christ is doing, here, is destroying the Pharisees’ incorrect expectation of a messiah who will be a secular and political powerhouse. The Pharisees are expecting a king in the mold of David — David’s “son” — who will raise an army and conquer Judea, driving out the Romans. But instead, their messiah will be a humble carpenter on a donkey colt, whose act of conquest will be dying like a criminal. King David icon King David “Christ” is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word “messiah”; both of them mean “the anointed one.” So, in the absence of Jesus, the Pharisees expectation was not unreasonable. David had been anointed by God, as Israel’s king, so they equated the “anointed one” with a new David. But they were overlooking the most powerful messianic prophesies, such as Isaiah, warning them that the messiah would be the prince of peace, and a messiah for the entire world (rather than simply the Hebrews). Even David prophesied the crucifixion! (Psalm 22.) So Jesus pokes an unmendable hole in yet another of their beliefs, by quoting David’s own prophecy in Psalm 110. This is a psalm of David; thus it is David himself calling the Messiah “my Lord”. David teaches that the Messiah will be his Lord; and David, the great king, called nobody “Lord” except God. It has begun to dawn on the Pharisees that they might be wrong about Jesus; and many of them admire and even believe Him. But as a group, they will choose pride over honesty, position over holiness. (John 12:42-44.) They would rather hold onto their power than change their theology. They will, therefore, kill the very Messiah they await, the Son of God. (Note: The reference in Psalm 110 to Melchizedek — well, who is in the world is Melchizedek? Luckily, we have just read about him, for Abram tithes to Melchizedek. (Genesis 14:17-20.) In a nutshell, what David is saying in Psalm 110 is this: Hebrew priests were required to be descendants of Aaron, by God’s own command (Leviticus 6:12-15), with one exception: the rather mysterious king/priest Melchizedek. We see more about this in Epistle to the Hebrews; Jesus Christ is our high priest, and the “order of Melchizedek” shows how Jesus qualifies to be a priest under the law of Moses, even though he was not a Levite, i.e. a descendant of Aaron. His priesthood predates Moses, Aaron, and the Law.)

Meditation :

Prayer : I bind myself to you this day, oh Christ, in your truth and in your sacrifice. I give to you my anxiety and my fear, my depression and my doubt, for you have promised to take them if we only ask; and I take upon myself your burden, for it is light and your way is gentle. May I keep this in my heart and mind all this day........Amen
