If you do not already have a habit of gathering daily manna the first thing in the morning (we can look at the example given to us in Exodus 16 and find the pattern for make it a habit. Establish your life and your schedule to allow you the necessary time to do your daily collection first thing every morning to give you the strength to make it through the day. And remember that today’s manna will not be sufficient for tomorrow; tomorrow’s manna must be collected tomorrow morning. Wednesday, May 1, 2019
Today's Passage : Today's Passage:Barnabas and Saul on Cyprus Bible Verse :Acts 13:1-5 "Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John to assist them. " Message:
Up until this point, Acts of the Apostles is a history of various occurrences in the early days after Jesus’ ascension, centering somewhat on Peter, but with Saul/Paul and others being featured at different times. Now, the book shifts its focus entirely to the great teacher of Christianity, one of the most remarkable men ever to live, Paul of Tarsus.
As we saw in the preceding verses, the center of Christianity’s spread had shifted to Antioch, an important city in Anatolia, close to the border of modern Turkey and Syria. There are several reasons for the rise of the church at Antioch. Primarily, it was not in a province ruled by Herod Agrippa (such as Judea and Galilee). Agrippa was tight with the Jewish religious authorities and had no compunctions about persecuting Christians. Also, Antioch was a large important city, reasonably close to Jerusalem but outside the reach of the Pharisees, and its church grew large.
The Holy Spirit has called Saul and Barnabas, two leading members of the Antioch Church, on a sea journey which brings them to Barnabas’ home town: the city of Salamis on the island of Cyprus. (This is not the same Salamis known today for the great naval battle between Athens and Persia.) The mission was to last over two years, from 46 A.D. to 48 A.D. (See Map of Paul and Barnabas’ mission.)
We don’t really know the identity of the “John” who went with them; it was probably not John the Evangelist.
Meditation : Prayer : And now let me go forth praising you, O Lord, with all my heart, telling of all your wonders, with my words and in my actions. I will be glad and rejoice in you this day. I will sing praise to your name, O Most High. .......Amen |
