Friend,
If you do not already have a habit of gathering daily manna the first thing in the morning (we can look at the example given to us in Exodus 16 and find the pattern for collecting daily manna), make it a habit. Establish your life and your schedule to allow you the necessary time to do your daily collection first thing every morning to give you the strength to make it through the day. And remember that today’s manna will not be sufficient for tomorrow; tomorrow’s manna must be collected tomorrow morning. Tuesday, July 3, 2018
Today's Passage : Today's Passage:Subjecta:The Advice of Hushai and Ahithophel Bible Verse:2 Samuel 16:15-23 (NLT) "Meanwhile, Absalom and all the army of Israel arrived at Jerusalem, accompanied by Ahithophel. When David’s friend Hushai the Arkite arrived, he went immediately to see Absalom. “Long live the king!” he exclaimed. “Long live the king!” “Is this the way you treat your friend David?” Absalom asked him. “Why aren’t you with him?” “I’m here because I belong to the man who is chosen by the Lord and by all the men of Israel,” Hushai replied. “And anyway, why shouldn’t I serve you? Just as I was your father’s adviser, now I will be your adviser!” Then Absalom turned to Ahithophel and asked him, “What should I do next?” Ahithophel told him, “Go and sleep with your father’s concubines, for he has left them here to look after the palace. Then all Israel will know that you have insulted your father beyond hope of reconciliation, and they will throw their support to you.” So they set up a tent on the palace roof where everyone could see it, and Absalom went in and had sex with his father’s concubines. Absalom followed Ahithophel’s advice, just as David had done. For every word Ahithophel spoke seemed as wise as though it had come directly from the mouth of God. " Message:
Keeping all of these names straight is a challenge. Ahithophel was one of David’s top counselors, a man of great wisdom, who deserted David and sided with Absalom after Absalom entered Jerusalem. There will be a great deal more said about him in the next several lessons. He was a great asset to Absalom, simply as an advisor.
Bible Proverbs 11
Hushai, similarly, was a man of great wisdom and had been a counselor to David, a member of his inner circle; he, however, had remained loyal. He rode out after David (with garments suitably torn and ashes in his hair), but David, relying on both his loyalty and his intelligence, sent him back to Jerusalem to spy and to “defeat the wisdom of Ahithophel.”
In today’s Scripture, Hushai puts David’s wishes into effect, and professes loyalty to Absalom. In the meantime, Ahithophel advises Absalom to take his father’s concubines as publicly as possible. Thus he proves his strength, not only by taking something that belonged to the king, but also by demonstrating a lack of concern at angering David.
