If you do not already have a habit of gathering daily manna the first thing in the morning (we can look at the example given to us in Exodus 16 and find the pattern for make it a habit. Establish your life and your schedule to allow you the necessary time to do your daily collection first thing every morning to give you the strength to make it through the day. And remember that today’s manna will not be sufficient for tomorrow; tomorrow’s manna must be collected tomorrow morning. Monday, September 1, 2025

Here Paul directly quotes one of the most famous and difficult teachings of Christ: “I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you . . . .” (Matthew 5:44) It will also become a major theme in Paul’s later epistles, particularly Colossians and Romans, where he expands the idea quite a bit:
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. . . . Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” (Romans 12:14, 17-19.)
There is no secret meaning here, nothing in the slightest bit difficult to understand. This is a lesson a four-year-old child can grasp. If somebody insults you, do not return the insult. Instead, “bless” them. We do have a bit of difficulty here, because we don’t bless people like the Jews did 2,000 years ago. Maybe the closest we can get is to just keep our mouths shut — and yes this can be very, very difficult indeed, if somebody has insulted you!
But there you have it, in black and white. From the mouth of Jesus Christ and repeatedly from his inspired Apostle, Paul. And this “no revenge” rule concerns not just words. It includes any and all attacks. The guy who cuts you off in traffic and gives you the finger. The guy who steals your credit cards. Our ultimate model here is Jesus Himself, for He modeled forgiveness, by granting the possibility of eternal salvation to people who tortured and murdered Him! (Luke 23:24)
And just in case someone finds a way to misread Jesus’ words, Stephen repeats them even more unequivocally: “And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’” (Acts 7:59-60)
