If you do not already have a habit of gathering daily manna the first thing in the morning (we can look at the example given to us in Exodus 16 and find the pattern for make it a habit. Establish your life and your schedule to allow you the necessary time to do your daily collection first thing every morning to give you the strength to make it through the day. And remember that today’s manna will not be sufficient for tomorrow; tomorrow’s manna must be collected tomorrow morning. Thursday, February 6, 2025
Today's Passage : Today's Passage :Paul Before the Sanhedrin [2] Bible Verse:Acts 23:6-10 (ESV) "Now when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. It is with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.” And when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all. Then a great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ party stood up and contended sharply, “We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?” And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him away from among them by force and bring him into the barracks." The Sadducees were the conservative sect that we would associate with ancient Hebrews. Theirs was the Judaism of priests, emphasizing sacrifice of animals. The Pharisees were the sect which we would recognize as modern Judaism. They believed in heaven and hell, taught some degree of pre-Christian forgiveness, and were attuned to reading and learning. They had been struggling for dominance among the Hebrews for centuries.
Oddly, the conservative Sadducees tended to be stronger in urban areas, probably because they were so aligned with the Temple of Jerusalem. Many of the high priests were Sadducees.
Paul was always clever about handling men and certainly understood divisiveness. Here, finding himself in trouble with the high priest Ananais ben Nebedeus, he instantly realizes how he can keep from being condemned and punished by the Sanhedrin: get them arguing among themselves.
He doesn’t lie about his belief in Christ; he simply doesn’t choose to volunteer the information at this specific time. The Sanhedrin really knows almost nothing about him, since his ministry has been far from Judea, and when he states his sympathy with the Pharisees and says that he is being persecuted for his belief in resurrection of the dead—which is certainly true—the Pharisees jump to his defense.
And so, the Roman commander, who has just rescued Paul from a disruptive mob, must now rescue him from a disruptive Sanhedrin.
Meditation : Prayer : May the Passion of Christ be ever in my heart. May your law and your goodness guide my every thought, O Lord. And may the power of your Holy Spirit flow through my words and my actions today, and always.........Amen |
