If you do not already have a habit of gathering daily manna the first thing in the morning (we can look at the example given to us in Exodus 16 and find the pattern for make it a habit. Establish your life and your schedule to allow you the necessary time to do your daily collection first thing every morning to give you the strength to make it through the day. And remember that today’s manna will not be sufficient for tomorrow; tomorrow’s manna must be collected tomorrow morning. Sunday, January 26, 2025
Today's Passage : Today's Passage :Paul Visits Philip the Evangelist Bible Verse:Acts 21:8-14 (BSB) "Leaving the next day, we went on to Caesarea and stayed at the home of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the Seven. He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied. After we had been there several days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own feet and hands, and said, “The Holy Spirit says: ‘In this way the Jews of Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and hand him over to the Gentiles.’” When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem. Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” When he would not be dissuaded, we fell silent and said, “The Lord’s will be done.”" Message:
Paul previously landed in the middle East at Tyre, from whence he has traveled south, down the coast to Ptolemais and now Caesarea, the capital of Roman Judea built by Herod the Great. (Map) It appears that he is still traveling by sea, but he will certainly proceed towards Jerusalem by land from this point.
We meet the remarkable Philip, once again: this is the Philip who was elected one of the seven deacons of Jerusalem (Acts 6:1-7) and later traveled to Samaria and Gaza, where he baptized an Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8). When we last saw him, after his remarkable actions in Gaza and Samaria, he moved to Caesarea, the capital of Roman Judea. And now Paul finds him still there, with four unmarried daughters who prophesy!
Acts only scratches the surface of all the church activity in the first century A.D. How I wish there was more to read about the remarkable Philip and his four daughters, who are only mentioned in passing. I feel sure he had a lot of interesting adventures. But we need to keep in mind that Acts of the Apostles is only a snapshot of an epic religious drama unfolding in the ancient world, from Ethiopia to Spain.
While in Philip’s house, Paul receives a dramatic prophesy that he will be arrested in Jerusalem. He knows, however, that he is following in Christ’s footsteps; so, like Christ, he is ready to be arrested and possibly executed when he arrives in Jerusalem. He seems to have reached a major inflection point in his life and his ministry. The missionary journeys are done. Now he faces his personal future.
Meditation : Prayer : May it please you, my good Lord, that there may come a day when I can repay a little of my great debt to you. O Jesus, strengthen my soul, you who are good above all good; and since you have inclined my soul in this way, show me how I may act for you, whatever it may cost, O Lord. Here is my life, my honor and my will; I have given them all to you and they are yours: use me to do whatever you want.......Amen |
