If you do not already have a habit of gathering daily manna the first thing in the morning (we can look at the example given to us in Exodus 16 and find the pattern for make it a habit. Establish your life and your schedule to allow you the necessary time to do your daily collection first thing every morning to give you the strength to make it through the day. And remember that today’s manna will not be sufficient for tomorrow; tomorrow’s manna must be collected tomorrow morning. Thursday, January 16, 2025
Today's Passage : Today's Passage :Eutychus Raised from the Dead Bible Verse:Acts 20:7-12 (ESV) "On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight. There were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered. And a young man named Eutychus, sitting at the window, sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked still longer. And being overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. But Paul went down and bent over him, and taking him in his arms, said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.” And when Paul had gone up and had broken bread and eaten, he conversed with them a long while, until daybreak, and so departed. And they took the youth away alive, and were not a little comforted." Message:
If you have ever thought that your church services lasted a long time, this Scripture might change your mind. Paul’s sermon starts at supper and runs until midnight. He was a world-class talker.
And his little congregation was only human; a long sermon, after supper, certainly put more than one listener to sleep. But Eutychus has the bad fortune to fall out a window from the third floor, thereby becoming immortalized in the Bible for going to sleep during a sermon. Luckily, he either did not die or was restored to life by Paul, so we can have a chuckle about it. Paul’s sermon nearly bored one listener to death!
This story also reminds us of the sense of community that has been so diluted in much of the modern world, especially in larger cities. Before radio and television, when we were not bombarded with entertainment, people really did know their neighbors better. Modern technology is a wonderful thing, but there is a cost in terms of community. It is worthwhile to make the effort to know your neighbors better. Weeknight church events are a wonderful way to do this.
Meditation : Prayer : Be merciful, O Lord, to those who have entrusted me, an unworthy sinner, to pray for them. Be merciful, O Lord, to all who ask Your help. O Lord, make this day a day of Your mercy; give to each according to their petition. Be the Shepherd of the lost, the Guide of Light of unbelievers, the Teacher of the unwise, the Father of orphans, the Helper of the oppressed, the Healer of the sick, the Comforter of the dying, and lead us all to the desired end — to You, our refuge and blessed repose. Thus I pray, in the name of Christ,.....Amen |
