If you do not already have a habit of gathering daily manna the first thing in the morning (we can look at the example given to us in Exodus 16 and find the pattern for make it a habit. Establish your life and your schedule to allow you the necessary time to do your daily collection first thing every morning to give you the strength to make it through the day. And remember that today’s manna will not be sufficient for tomorrow; tomorrow’s manna must be collected tomorrow morning. Thursday, May 18, 2023
Today's Passage : Today's Passage :How Faith is Learned Bible Verse:1 Corinthians 2:1-5 (ESV) "And I, when I came to you, brothers and sisters, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. Looking back at Paul’s arguments in 1 Corinthians, we can infer that the divisions and arguments among the Christians of Corinth were the result of people applying their logic to the Gospel. They were, after all, Greek. Philosophy and logical discourse were their metier, their strong point; it was how they had been raised to approach issues of faith.
Yet, although Paul sees quite sharply the problems they have caused with their philosophizing, he does not criticize them directly; rather, he comes at it from the side, demonstrating the inadequacy of human wisdom in finding God. He does not criticize a particular person, but rather the inadequacy of a method of inquiry. In the verses directly preceding, he made the point that “God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise” — God made His word known, not by logic, but by a basic spiritual knowledge often more easily grasped by the humble than the educated.
Now he uses his own actions to demonstrate how one might learn and preach the good news of Christ. He admits that he has often been afraid, in his travels and preaching, that what he was saying was not plausible. Paul was human, and he felt the rejection and mockery. No doubt, he got called “idiot” and “moron” on a daily basis; and considering how many times he was imprisoned, stoned, etc., we can only marvel at his determination.
But it is this very determination that characterizes his point: that it is the power of the spirit, not the mind, which drove his message all over Turkey and Greece, and eventually into Rome itself. Paul did not argue; he testified. He was filled with the Spirit of God, not a message of logic and wisdom, for it is ultimately impossible for us to know God solely through our minds. Anyone who wants to tell us “why” God does or does not exist, is wasting his breath, because the Spirit is beyond the human faculty of reason, beyond all wisdom and knowledge.
Meditation : “We seldom realize fully that we are sent to fulfill God-given tasks. We act as if we were simply dropped down in creation and have to decide to entertain ourselves until we die. But we were sent into the world by God, just as Jesus was. Once we start living our lives with that conviction, we will soon know what we were sent to do.” Prayer : Now to him who by his power within us is able to do far more than we ever dare to ask or imagine — to him be glory in the Church through Jesus Christ for ever and ever,...Amen. |
